From the 1991 Studio: SPRING NOTES
Every season when the weather starts to warm, I find myself going back to the same feeling: sun-bleached photographs, old ranch ephemera, soft cotton tanks, white tees, horses standing quietly in tall grass.
Spring always feels like a reset — lighter colors, simpler silhouettes, and pieces that feel lived-in rather than overly polished. As I’ve been designing the next round of merchandise for 1991, I’ve been collecting images, textures, and references that capture that feeling.
This is the visual world behind the pieces currently in the works.
The Visual Language
So much of this season’s inspiration comes from vintage western imagery — not the overly polished version of the West, but the quiet, documentary kind.
Old horse sketches, worn saddle illustrations, ranch stamps, Pony Express posters, and faded typography from early American workwear labels.
There’s something timeless about these pieces of design. They weren’t created to be trendy — they were simply practical, functional, and beautiful in their own way.
I love the idea of bringing that spirit into modern pieces: graphics that feel like they could have existed fifty years ago.
Textures & Motifs
Some design details you’ll see in the upcoming line:
• hand-drawn horse sketches
• cattle brand–style graphics
• vintage western typography
• floral border illustrations
• saddle and tack imagery
• ranch stamp motifs
• subtle cowhide textures
• polka dots & modern motifs
Nothing too heavy — just small references that make each piece feel like it belongs to a larger western story.
The Photography
The images that keep inspiring me right now all share the same softness.
A girl standing beside a horse.
Wind moving through long hair.
A simple white tank and cotton skirt.
Nothing styled too perfectly.
The feeling is feminine but grounded — a kind of quiet cowgirl energy.
I’ve been especially drawn to photography that feels slightly faded or sun-washed, like something found in an old magazine or ranch archive box.
It reminds me that western style has always been more about grit and ease than about trying too hard.
Whats to Coming
The pieces I’m working on right now are meant to feel like things you’d throw on without thinking.
Simple graphic tees.
Bandanas.
A Spring Jacket.
And a few designs that feel almost like vintage ranch merchandise.
Things you could wear riding, running errands, or sitting outside in the late afternoon sun.
Spring always feels like the beginning of something, and this collection is shaping up to reflect that.
More soon.
